Ocho Rios Primary gets new reading area

Students and teachers of the Ocho Rios Primary School were in celebratory mood on Monday, April 13, during the handing over ceremony of a Garden Reading Area under a project spearheaded by the Kiwanis Club of the Garden Parish (St. Ann), led by Eva Myers.

The project, which cost one hundred and thirty-six thousand dollars ($136,000), was completed with the help of several corporate entities and individuals. Among these were, Dolphin Cove, St. Ann and Mystic Mountain, Evita’s Italian Restaurant, Sagicor Bank, Anita Pallemberg and the Kiwanis Club of the Garden Parish.The Garden Reading Area consists of six tables and benches,made of cement, one donated by each sponsor. The area was designed for children to sit and read during break time or lunch time, or at times approved by teachers.The principal of Ocho Rios Primary, Gertrude McFarlane, expressed her sincere gratitude to the sponsors for the creation of the reading area and added that it will serve the students of the morning and evening shifts at the school.In her overview, Ms Myers, president of the Kiwanis Club of the Garden Parish, noted that it was a well deserved initiative that had to be undertaken and she thanked the other sponsors for their partnership.

In her vote of thanks, Audrey Grant, who is a teacher and Kiwanian expressed her gratitude to the sponsors who made the dreams of the Reading Garden a reality. “I feel very humbled as one of the initiators of the project,” said Mrs. Grant, who is one of the originators behind the project.
