6th form student is Miss Portland Festival Queen

Nineteen-year-old Kristina Newby a sixth form student at the Titchfield High school was crowned Miss Portland Festival Queen 2016 at the weekend.Newby took the crown and was awarded three sectional prizes at the coronation show, at the Port Antonio High School on Saturday, May 21.She won the awards as most congenial, most poised and most active in the community. First runner up Nishika Gordon copped the most culturally aware award.Meanwhile, second runner up Khristalee Amore was awarded the best performance.

Newby told the North Coast Times, “the night was full of surprises. I was having fun and doing my best whilst also representing my culture and my parish and it paid off.”

She said she was surprised in winning three sectional prizes, “I know I was having fun and my mother is a strong woman. She has always told me that my best will always be good enough and it turns out that mothers are always right.”She said her parish project is to start cultural clubs in institutions. “I believe that all development begins in the school system and so we must teach our youth and citizens, starting from their institutions.”As she looks forward to the national finals she said, “I pray that my parish will be behind me and my supporters will evolve with me and I will have a strong team going with me into the finals and bring the crown back home to Portland.”
