SENT TO PRISON AGAIN! 9 months for stealing hedge cutter

A man, who has been convicted multiple times, has one again been sent to prison.

The man, who appeared before the St Ann Parish Court, admitted to stealing a hedge cutter and later selling it.

He is 38-year-old Gary Fletcher of no fixed address.

He was sent to prison for nine months by parish judge Vaughn Facey, when he appeared before the court on Wednesday, August 24.

The man, who Fletcher is alleged to have sold the item to, Ryan Myers, had his bail extended, when he appeared on charges of receiving stolen property.

Allegations are that on Saturday, August 20, Fletcher stole a black and orange black and decker electronic hedge cutter valued at US $250. It is further alleged that Fletcher sold the hedge cutter to Ryan Myers for a mere J$200.  Myers was later held with the hedge cutter in his possession and charged for receiving stolen property.

When the matter came before Judge Facey on Wednesday afternoon, almost immediately, he recognized Fletcher.

“But anuh dis a the said man me send go prison fi some months?” Judge Facey questioned.

“One month mi come out of prison and me can’t take another prison sentence again,” Fletcher explained, almost in a happy tone.

The crown prosecutor later told the judge that Fletcher had been charged with stealing a hedge cutter.

“Why yuh always a tief?” Judge Facey asked Fletcher.

“Nobody nah give me nuh work and dem nah really help me,” Fletcher explained.

He further confessed to taking the hedge cutter and selling the item to a man who he said was his friend.

The item was sold for a mere two hundred Jamaican dollars.

“Two hundred dollars?” Judge Facey asked in astonishment.

However, the attorney representing Myers, the man accused of receiving the stolen hedge cutter, raised the defense that his client did not know the item as stolen. Rather the $200 was only a down payment for the item.

Myers is to return to court on October 19, when the case against him in the matter is to be mentioned.

Myers, who was already on bail, had it extended for that date.

However, Fletcher had no such luck.

“Nine months, Mr Fletcher,” Judge Facey told him.
