The rivers of Ocho Rios

The Editor,

Sir

Your paper, in recent weeks, has again turned the light on Ocho Rios and its great deficiencies.

Recently you showed the gullies in a section of the town. However, you haven’t pointed to the disaster when a little rain falls. Then, the streets of uptown and downtown Ocho Rios become little rivers. This is not where the town’s name came from. This is true of Main Street, from the area around Chucks Plaza to the clock as well  as even the areas near the banks. The worse, though, is Graham Street, especially when, as is often, the drain in front of National Housing Trust is blocked. The people having business in Jamaica National, the Guardian Life building (including Cool Oasis and JMMB) as well as the Ocho Rios Clinic and NHT are greatly inconvenienced.

It’s true the problem comes from the hills, where the trees continue to be cut down to make way for squatters, even in the NWC basin at Bogue. That problem is long known, but can’t someone do something about the streets that cause so much grief to people of Ocho Rios after the slightest shower.
