Portland man turns in himself in death of girlfriend

A Portland man who was being sought for questioning in the murder of a woman, with whom he had a rocky relationship, is to receive the services of a legal aid attorney.

Dead is 51-year-old Joan Patterson Fitzgerald of Union district, Hope Bay in the parish. She was found dead on Monday, September 19.

Lidley Samuels of Toms Hope in the Rio Grande Valley in Portland turned himself over to the police on Wednesday, September 21 after being on the run for two days.

He was accompanied by a family member, who allegedly told investigators that Samuels was confused by the incident and was contemplating suicide.

Samuels was scheduled to undergo a question and answer interview on last Thursday (September 22) with detectives from the Criminal Investigative Branch (CIB) in Port Antonio, but he told investigators that he was unable to afford an attorney.

Police reports are that on Monday, September 19, one of the woman’s sons, who had gone to visit her out of concern, found her body on the floor at her house shortly after 8:30 p.m. The police were called in, and they later observed a wound to the head.

Further reports are that the two were involved in a rocky relationship and the woman decided to end the relationship. This, however, reportedly did not go down well with Samuels.
