Caught with gun in Ochi, man faces additional charges

A man, caught with an illegal firearm close to an Ocho Rios plaza in St Ann, is to be slapped with additional charges.

The investigating officer objected to bail being offered for the accused man when he appeared before the St Ann Parish Court on Thursday, November 17.

Twenty-seven-year-old Renardo Williams otherwise called ‘Tante’, of Top Milford Road in Ocho Rios, St Ann, was before the courts on charges of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

Reports are that on Saturday, November 5, at about 7:50 a.m., Williams was walking in the vicinity of Pointe Plaza in Ocho Rios when he was searched by the police.

One Taurus 9mm pistol with a magazine containing fifteen 9mm rounds was found in his possession. The firearm was seized by the police and Williams arrested and charged.

NO BAIL

Williams’ explained to senior parish judge Andrea Thomas that his client had been in custody for some time and was asking for bail to be considered.

However, Judge Thomas pointed out to the attorney that the matter was “an in-camera matter” and the court room had to be cleared. This meant that members of the public had to be asked to wait outside the court room as gun related matters are not discussed or heard in the public domain.

“Is the prosecution objecting to bail?” Judge Thomas enquired.

The investigating officer explained that he is opposing bail as Williams has “another matter pending” which is of a similar nature.

The case was later set for mention on Thursday, December 8.

Williams was remanded into custody until that time.
