An eleven-year-old boy remains in hospital after tragedy struck early Monday morning, January 16, in Buckfield, Ocho Rios, St Ann.

A huge cotton tree, toppled over and fell on a one room wood and zinc house smashing it and killing a man and his daughter.

Dead are: Sheriana Shaw, 13 year old student of Wakerswood All Age school, and her father Shawn Shaw, a juice vendor of Capture Land, Great Pond, Ocho Rios.

Eleven-year-old Shawn Anthony Shaw was pinned beneath a branch of the tree and was pulled out by neighbours and taken to hospital Monday morning. Neighbours said the tree fell about 2:40 and killed Shaw and his daughter instantly.

The son who was the other person in the house is in serious condition in hospital.

Donald Hudson, who was a long time friend of the senior Shaw, says the man he knows as ‘Juicey’ was a good man.

“He was a good yute. Him sell him juice and come out back a him house. Him run him jokes and him vibezy. Him give yuh good encouragement too,” Hudson said.

He also added that Shaw always hustled for his family. Shaw lived alone with his two children and had constructed the house about three years ago.

The tree some 40 feet long and so big that a grown man could not put his arms completely around it, tore away from its roots, tearing down branches of pear trees and an almond tree before coming down with a huge branch on one of the beds where father and daughter slept.
