Man to be sentenced for Ochi river killing

The man charged for the murder of another, in 2015, in the town of Ocho Rios pleaded to the charge when he appeared before high court judge, Justice Georgiana Fraser in the St Ann Circuit Court on Monday, February 6.

Cleve Sutherland is the man charged for the stabbing death of a construction worker Richard Lester Williams, in the vicinity of the Turtle River Park.

On Monday, Sutherland pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter. The plea was accepted by the prosecution as evidence suggested Sutherland was angry up until the time of the stabbing.

Attorney representing Sutherland, Robert Brown and the investigation officer in the case, sub officer in charge of the PIU for St Ann Det. Sgt. Kirk Nicholls were present in court when Sutherland pleaded.

Sutherland is to return to court on February 23, when he will be sentenced.

Allegations are that on February 23, 2015, Sutherland got into a dispute with Williams over his (Sutherland’s) wallet that had gone missing while both of them were at a popular swimming hole next to Turtle River Park.

Further allegations state that it was during this dispute that Sutherland used a knife to stab Williams in the neck, killing him. Sutherland was taken into custody for questioning and subsequently charged.

The post mortem results also suggested that Williams died as a result of wounds sustained.
