Good Samaritan allegedly robbed by man he helped out

robbing

A man charged for stealing a number of items from another and being violent was offered bail when he appeared before the St Ann Parish Court on Thursday, March 30.

Charged for robbery with aggravation is Peter Taylor from Ocho Rios in the parish.

Allegations are that at about 4 a.m., on Saturday, March 11, the complainant was walking along a roadway in the Buckfield community of Ocho Rios when he was held up and robbed.

After the robbery he then saw Taylor with whom he is familiar.  Taylor asked him for a call and the complainant told Taylor that he (the complainant) had no credit. Taylor then told him that he only wanted a ‘please call me’.

The complainant then gave the phone to Taylor and proceeded to tell him that he was robbed a short while ago.

It is further alleged that when the complainant asked Taylor to return the phone, he did not return it but instead went on to rob him (the complainant) of a bag he was carrying.

According to the allegations outlined by the prosecution in court, the bag was said to have contained a HP laptop, a pair of sunglasses and J$1500.

After taking the bag, Taylor ran off a warned the complainant “mek sure yuh disappear…”

The complainant then made a report to the police who, based on intelligence, located Taylor and arrested him.Reports are that when he was found by the police he was wearing the sunglasses which the complainant identified to be his.

The court was told that there are three witnesses for the crown, one of whom had received the stolen laptop from Taylor.

When asked about the value of the items which were taken from him, the complainant told the court that the phone costs J$15,000 while the laptop had a value of J$35,000. He went on to list other items which were in the bag without their values. These include a pair of sunglasses, a thumb drive and a USB cable.

Attorney representing Taylor, Everal Webster, told the court that his client is not denying claims of the incident and that he was the one who assisted the police with information that led them to find the laptop. Mr Webster, therefore, says Taylor has been cooperative during the investigation.

Taylor was granted bail by parish judge Vaughn Facey, in the sum of J$100,000 with one or two sureties. He was granted bail with reporting conditions and a curfew order was imposed.

The matter is set for trial on November 30 of this year.
