‘A MOMENT OF MADNESS’ Convict who killed ex loved her and wanted her back

A man, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his ex-girlfriend, had refused to acknowledge that their relationship was over.

The convicted man, Ryan Edwards, is to serve 15 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.

Edwards was charged after he stabbed his ex-lover, 20-year-old Alisa Garey to death, just moments after she had gone to the Ocho Rios Police Station, to make a report about him on Wednesday, December 14, 2016.

He had pleaded guilty to the murder in the St Ann Circuit Court on Friday, October 20.

Garey had broken off the relationship with Edwards but he refused to acknowledge her decision.

Edward’s lawyer, Nathan Geddes Morrison said his client was deeply in love with Garey and wanted her back. He described the killing as a “moment of madness”, stating that Edwards would never really hurt her.

He received a discount in the typical 25-30-year sentence usually imposed in murder matters.

There was drama too in the court house at St Ann’s Bay on the initial day of sentencing on Thursday, November 2. Garey’s sister had gone to court to hear the sentencing. As Edwards was brought inside the court, she began crying uncontrollably. Both her and her grandmother, Laney McFarlane were removed from court. However, the sentencing was put off until the next day (Friday, November 3).

After Edwards’ sentencing last Friday, the family have said that they are satisfied with the sentence given.

It was alleged that Garey was walking along the roadway in the vicinity of Champion supermarket, in Ocho Rios, in the company of her mother.

An altercation developed between Edwards and one of the females. This was when Edwards pulled a knife from his waist and stabbed Garey.

Edwards then attempted to escape in nearby bushes but was apprehended by the police.

Garey succumbed to her injuries at the hospital shortly after.
